BUILDING & APARTMENTS

The functionalist masterpiece designed by Alvar Aalto comes to life as the most stylish residential building of the 2020s. Taking a look at the facade of the Punavuori Engineers' Building, you can see how Alvar Aalto developed his style to a new level during its design.

Alvar Aalto's Ratakatu is given a new life

In the 1930s, Alvar Aalto had impressed the Finnish and international community by being one of the most prominent pioneers of new, modernist architecture. Ratakatu 9 represents the second bold opening of Aalto's career.

Building's history

From Offices to Homes

Ratakatu 9 was originally designed as an office and clubhouse for engineers. Later, the building has also served Finnish National Broadcasting company, and hosted, for example, Jimi Hendrix's studio gig in 1967. Over the years, the building also housed a theater and a cinema. Newil&Bau's conversion construction awakened it to a new use: a residential building.

GREEN COURT YARD

Beauty, greenery and functionality all around the year are the hallmarks of the N&B home yard. The finished courtyards blend the building into its surroundings and let the home continue outside the walls.

COURTYARD

Inviting, compact courtyard

The building has a small, well-planned and cozy inner courtyard. There is a bike shed and a recycling room with containers for glass, metal, cardboard, plastic, paper, mixed waste and bio-waste. A sitting area with table and benches has been planned next to the bike shed for entertaining. Greenery is created by meadow and heather plants growing in pots, as well as the green roofs of the bike shed and the recycling room.

RESIDENT SERVICES

The entrance hall of Insinööritalo was furnished in cooperation with Artek Helsinki. In the basement of the building, a pram storage room was built in the immediate vicinity of the elevator. Bicycle storage and new apartment-specific storage were also built in the basement.
